My Journey to No Makeup

I previously wrote about the beginning of my low tox journey and the products I started with (you can read it here The Beginning of My Low Tox Journey + Nourished Life Delivery), I also mentioned that I hardly wear makeup anymore and promised a post dedicated to this. So this is for anyone wanting to do the same, wondering where to start and how I got to the point of confidence within my own skin. Before I begin I will point out that I don’t wear makeup ‘most’ of the time, I do though still wear it for special occasions or events.

Makeup was a non negotiable daily part of my routine. I would shower, get dressed and then put a full face of makeup on before I left the house, every, single, day. Not only is makeup expensive when you use it every single day, but it was also taking up my precious morning time before I would begin my day. At night I would again have to make time to take it all off. Exhausting right? It sure was.

When I began my low tox journey I also threw out nearly all of my makeup along with the other body products, so going bare faced was going to be a step of this new journey regardless. I will do a further post in the future of the makeup I now wear when I do decide to wear it, and let me tell you, compared to before this is an extremely minimal routine. I am not saying for anyone to go into their bathroom and throw it all out, I jumped into the deep end straight away, but if you are thinking about it, start small and work your way to a more natural routine in the way of makeup, and believe me when I say this is incredibly liberating after wearing it for so long, day in, day out, not to mention the money you save in the long run.

Now let’s talk about that liberating journey. I remember the first day I decided not to wear it out.. I felt extremely self conscious, like I was ‘unfinished’ and not, if I dare say,  at all beautiful in my own skin. Makeup made me feel beautiful, it made me feel ready to take on the world. This should not be the case though for anyone out there, we shouldn’t have to cover up to be confident. I kept at it though, I stopped wearing it on the weekends first, and then eventually I stopped wearing it to work, and you know what? Nobody was looking at me any differently, nobody said anything to me, nobody even noticed. I now wake up in the morning and am ready in about 10 minutes, leaving me an abundance of time leftover, say hello to relaxed mornings.

My skin now glows in the morning when I wake up, I don’t feel the need to cover up anymore. In fact the last time I put makeup on I looked at myself in the mirror and had a little epiphany, I realised I actually prefer the image of myself without it now. I’ve gotten more compliments on my complexion than I ever did with a full face of makeup. I also love not having to take it off at night and instead just getting ready for bed and still feeling fresh faced.

I know this may not be a journey to take on for some as some of us have skin issues and we use makeup to make ourselves feel better, trust me when I say I’ve been there, I’ve hated what I saw in the mirror without makeup and was once medicated to relieve my skin issues, but it wasn’t until I stopped using all of these products on my skin (taking the medication included), it wasn’t until I stopped clogging my pores every day with an extra few layers, that my skin really started to heal and finally flourish how it naturally should.

Once again this has been and still is an extremely liberating experience for me, sure it took a lot of days (weeks even) of deep breaths in the mirror and self love pep talks to leave the house feeling self confident, it took daily persistence every day and making myself hold my head high no matter what, but I’ll never look back. Remember it’s the world that makes you feel like you need to cover up (or money driven marketing schemes if we want to go there), you should never have to, for anyone. You were born natural and naturally beautiful you still are. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

The Beginning of My Low Tox Journey + Nourished Life Delivery

I have spoken a little bit about going low tox over on my personal Instagram (@chloeawilson) and here. Through listening to some podcasts around the topic (I’ll share these in another blog post) and doing my research I began to realise how harmful the everyday products we use are for our bodies, and the disruption they have from the inside out, from our hormones to our skin to name some.

One night I went into the bathroom and went through what I was using, I practically through everything out after reading the labels and then hopped onto Nourished Life, a website dedicated to low tox products, and made my first order to start making those life changing low tox swaps with my everyday products. It’s been a process since then and still is as to do it all at once is a big change, but every time I shop I try and make the better choices now and I feel like my body has never been happier.

I thought I would share with you my first Nourished Life delivery and the beauty products I chose to begin my low tox journey..

In the name of keeping it raw and real, this is the ‘before I placed everything beautifully for the unboxed photo’ photo.

My first order of low tox products from Nourished Life.

Dr Bronner’s Hand Sanitising Spray 59ml

This hand sanitiser is by far one of my favourite products ever. Not only is it obviously sanitising, it is also beautifully calming. Sometimes I even just spray it around like a mist and I have even used it to clean my glasses. I don’t think I could ever go back to using those highly potent and toxic hand sanitisers ever again after discovering this product. If you are like me and find the standard gel like hand sanitisers over powering and skin drying (there’s a toxic reason in the ingredients that they are like that and it isn’t good for your skin!), then this is a must try.

Dr Bronner’s Organic Hand & Body Lotion – Lavender Coconut 237ml

I use this moisturiser daily, primarily on my legs. I have sensitive skin so finding a body moisturiser that makes my skin happy is really important to me. It’s not oily, dries quickly for those rushed mornings and leaves my skin feeling soft all day, and of course it smells amazing (I have a deep love for anything lavender).

Inika Certified Organic Foundation Trial Pack – ‘Light’

This trial pack was so much fun to try out. I haven’t yet purchased the full size products yet due to the fact that I pretty much never wear makeup anymore (I will go into this deeper in another blog post) unless it’s for an event or special reason, not even to work, but I loved all of it, especially the ‘Grace’ mineral powder. It gave a natural flawless finish, perfect for everyday wear. I do though intend on restarting my makeup kit with entirely Inika eventually. I recently bought the Inika mascara from my hair salon which I am really excited to try out.

Inika Micellar Cleansing Rosewater 100ml

Cleansing is something I’ve always struggled with as so many products in the past have made a total mess of my sensitive skin, yes, even the apparently devoted ‘sensitive’ products on the market. This cleanser though is absolutely divine, it takes makeup off effortlessly, doesn’t dry out my skin and leaves it glowing. I even use it when I don’t wear makeup just to freshen up. I absolutely adore this product and will most definitely be keeping it in my routine on a regular.

Vanessa Megan White Tea Antioxidant Day Cream – Sample Sachet

I only purchased the sample sachet as once again with my skin I’m very weary about what I use especially when it comes to moisturisers. For the few times I used this though I loved it and would like to try it again for a longer period.

Vanessa Megan Marine Collagen Anti-Ageing Night Cream – Sample Satchet

Again I only purchased the sample sachet, but this was seriously amazing. I’ve never used anything with collagen in it before, but I feel like I could sense the amazing things it was doing to my skin as soon as I applied it. I would definitely like to try it again like the day cream for a longer period.

Vanessa Megan Darling Natural Perfume 15ml

I am not a spray deodorant person and never have been, but perfume is something I enjoy wearing daily so swapping this out for a low tox version was a must try. This perfume was everything I thought it would be, subtle, but floral and sweet. I am in dire need of another bottle, I loved it so much that I actually miss it.

Vanessa Megan Vanilla Pod Roll On Deodorant 50ml

I’ve been using this daily ever since I purchased it and I love it. Although depending on your personal body, natural deodorant may not have the desired affect, so I recommend trying out different ones until you find one that works with your body. Swapping to natural deodorant is indeed a journey in itself. I intend on trying out others, but my skin and I have loved this since I began using it.

Weleda Pomegranate Regenerating Hand Cream – Sample Sachet

I purchased a sample sachet of this as I already had moisturisers that I love and use daily, but it was fun to try out. I’ve always wanted to try out Weleda products and this did not disappoint. Although if I were to get another I probably would get one that’s a little less fragrant as I’m a lover of the subtle scents.

My Favourite Winter Body + Home Products

Hello Winter! Just kidding, we are nearly halfway through the season here in Australia, but is this you when the weather starts to cool, happy and excited, welcoming the cold with open arms? I’m envious of you if it is, as for me Winter is definitely not my favourite time of the year. My body tends to ache, my skin becomes super dry and I don’t particularly like having to keep the windows closed and all of the blankets on the bed. This year though however, I’ve found some beautiful products that have made Winter 2017 for me here in Australia that much more bearable.

Vanilla Lip Balm 15ml + Lavendar & Rose Geranium Body Butter 100ml by Olieve & Ollie

Lip Balm + Body Butter

Coming into Winter, my lips start to become dry instantly, nothing has ever seemed to work for me. I felt like I had tried everything and had given up and settled with a basic balm. One day though I went into one of my favourite shops to try again, to find a product that would help me get through this Winter, and hopefully indefinitely. I ended up having a conversation with one of the sales assistants and she agreed with me on so many levels about the products I had tried, and then went onto recommend this particular lip balm as it was everything I had described I wanted, and so much more. When I put it on during the day it stays on, even after I eat and drink, and doesn’t leave any residue on your lips once it starts to wear off and your skin dries out again. The best lip balm I have ever tried, I’ve been recommending it to everyone.

After falling so deep in love with how it was making my lips feel, I of course went back for another product from the same brand, the body butter. The night before I purchased this I had a pretty severe reaction to a cream I used on my hands, by a brand I use to really believe in and love. My hands became so irritated after putting it on before bed that I couldn’t sleep and ended up in a lot of pain. The next day I tried out this body butter, again on my hands, and it felt life saving, it made my skin feel so soft and nourished, and it smelt amazing too. I have used it regularly since and have never had a reaction, this is of course like all of my blog posts, my own personal journey hence I didn’t mention the previous brand I was using. This product if you ever get a chance to try it, you can thank me later. It really is so incredibly beautiful.

Lemon Myrtle Room Spray 125ml by Wild Leaf Botanicals

Room Spray

As I mentioned, I don’t particularly like having the house closed up all the time to keep the cold out, because I’m a fresh air lover through and through, give me the outdoors over air-conditioning any day, yes, even on the hottest of days. This room spray I picked up from a little creatives market I visited in Brisbane when I was actually on the hunt for a location for my photo shoot. Wild Leaf Botanicals was the first stall I stopped at on my way in, the set up was warm and inviting, and so were the souls behind it all. After checking out their products I noticed the room spray, I sprayed some, and immediately fell in love. Falling in love at first smell, definitely a thing. I’ve since used it regularly around the house and in the bedroom, whenever I feel like things need a little freshening up and a calmer vibe. I’m totally smitten with this product. Keep an eye out on my future product reviews, because I have since aquired some more of their products, which I absolutely cannot wait to share with you too.

Nourishing Night Cream by The Essential Cleaner

Night Cream

These days my skin care routine is pretty minimal, I rarely wear makeup and now focus more on low toxicity products, nourishment from both inside and out! It was a beautiful Sunday morning and after we had a coffee at our local, we went to some local markets in our area. I browsed some of the stalls and then came across The Essential Cleaner. Once again the stall was beautifully presented, leaving me wanting to test it all. The main product though that took my fancy was the night cream after it was so kindly suggested. I’ve never really had a face cream due to my sensitive/oily skin, I know, what a combination. After trying it on my hand, hearing about the ingredients, the process and having a soulful chat about all things low tox with the business owner it was a must add to my skincare routine. I’ve since used it nearly every night since and my skin now feels like it’s literally glowing, if skin could be happy mine definitely feels happy.

( – I will have to update this post as I wasn’t able to find a link to this particular product I found at the market stall online.

All of these brands not only easily caught my attention because they are so beautiful, but also because they are Australian made and owned and all are all low tox products being made from natural and pure ingredients. I’m so in love.
